Packaging

Packaging plays a critical role in our business as it protects, preserves, promotes and provides information about our products to our consumers. We recognise, however, that there are environmental impacts associated with the manufacture, transport, use and disposal of packaging. Goodman Fielder's packaging programs strive to find the right balance between packaging functionality and minimising the associated environmental impacts.

Through the introduction of light weighting and recycled content initiatives in the 1990s and a 10 year commitment to the National Packaging Covenant, Goodman Fielder has achieved significant progress in reducing the environmental impact of our packaging.

In 2010 we continued that commitment by becoming a signatory to the Australian Packaging Covenant.

Australian Packaging Covenant

The Australian Packaging Covenant (APC) is a co-regulatory, voluntary commitment by governments and industry to the sustainable design, use and recovery of packaging. More information about the Covenant can be found at www.packagingcovenant.org.au.

Goodman Fielder's Australian Packaging Covenant (APC) Action Plan (available here) sets out our commitments to reducing the environmental impact of our packaging materials for the period 2010 to 2015. Importantly, we are continually working with our fellow Covenant signatories, packaging suppliers and customers to minimise the environmental impacts associated with our packaging material.

National Packaging Covenant (2000-2010)

Goodman Fielder became a signatory of the National Packaging Covenant in 2000 and maintained a continuous commitment to this voluntary program until 2010 when it was replaced by the Australian Packaging Covenant.

The Plan was assessed by an independent reviewer, who provided the following feedback:
"Goodman Fielder are to be congratulated on an excellent plan. As the owner of many well-known food brands with large and complex packaging systems, Goodman Fielder have put considerable resources into a plan that reflects well on a major brand owner."

National Packaging Covenant Annual Reports

A star rating system was developed in 2006/2007 by the National Packaging Covenant to provide feedback on annual reports. Goodman Fielder recevied a 4.6 out of 5 star rating for each annual report submitted after the system was introduced.
